Kindergarten Teacher

Q. What date did you start in the new role?

A. Aug. 7, 2024.

Q. What is your background experience that led to this position?

A. I attended Mohawk Valley Community College for Childhood Education and received my associate’s degree in May 2022, then transferred to SUNY Oneonta to complete my education. I graduated from Oneonta in May 2024 with a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education certifying me to teach first through sixth grade. During my formal education, I worked for two summers with the Oneida County summer school program. I was a teacher’s aide for the preschool age children that would be entering kindergarten in the fall. I knew immediately this was the age group for me. During student teaching, I looked for opportunities to be placed in kindergarten and first grade classrooms to learn all I could from the teachers/mentors. Following graduation, I continued my education in the summer of 2024 to earn additional certifications for birth through second grade, as this was the age group I wanted to teach.

Q. What makes you excited about working in your new role at Herkimer CSD?

A. I am most excited about meeting my students and building a classroom of learning and enjoyment! I am eager to work with a knowledgeable and experienced team of peers and to build relationships in order to learn and grow as a teacher.

Q. When did you first know you wanted become a teacher and what made you feel that way?

A. I think I knew I wanted to become a teacher at a very young age. In elementary school, we participated in reading programs to the younger children, and I immediately felt a connection. I enjoyed the children’s enthusiasm and their imaginations. I then became an aunt and was captivated in watching my niece grow and learn. These experiences pushed me to start my career in education.

Q. What do you think makes Herkimer CSD special?

A. Herkimer CSD is special because of the “neighborly” connection. In a smaller community, or school, everyone is your neighbor, and neighbors come together to help one another and improve their community. There is a huge sense of community and togetherness within Herkimer CSD. I want to enjoy any and all opportunities and experiences the school and community have to offer.
