Herkimer sixth graders had an assembly on Thursday, Nov. 9, featuring two veterans who are also teachers at the Herkimer Jr./Sr. High School.
Nick Sheldon, 10th grade social studies teacher, and Leah Peyton, of Academic Support Services, answered questions from sixth graders about their service in the military.
“Thank you, Mr. Sheldon and Mrs. Peyton, for your service to our county and for taking time out of your busy teaching schedule to talk to the sixth grade students,” Herkimer sixth grade teacher Cheryl Jory said.
The assembly was one way that Veterans Day was recognized at the Herkimer Jr./Sr. High School. During morning announcements, Middle School Student Council members Gwen McCutcheon, Molly Philo, Isabella Yocum and Faith Parmon talked about the history of Veterans Day and how it is celebrated. Faculty and staff wore American flag pins in honor of Sheldon, Peyton and Veterans Day.
During the assembly, Sheldon and Peyton brought in some of their military gear to show students. They also spoke about the geographical areas where they were stationed and shared their favorite area of the world they have been to.
