Herkimer students support Herkimer County Out of the Darkness Walk

Herkimer Middle-High School students supported the Herkimer County Out of the Darkness Walk in a variety of ways on Saturday, Sept. 28.

American Foundation for Suicide Prevention Out of the Darkness Community Walks aim to raise awareness for mental health and suicide prevention. The second annual Herkimer County Walk was based out of Arc Herkimer’s Arc Park and brought together several hundred community members dedicated to making a difference as they raised money and walked through Herkimer.

“Herkimer students including members of the Class of 2025, Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), National Junior Honor Society and other school-sponsored groups took on various tasks to ensure everything ran smoothly,” Herkimer Central School District Prevention Service Coordinator Crystal Gerhardt said. “Students took the lead to set up a water/support station here at the Herkimer Middle-High School and made posters of support to increase awareness.”

In addition to the support as Herkimer County Walk participants walked by the Middle-High School, students decided to stay involved after that.

“As the day wrapped up, many students continued to volunteer their time and helped organizers run family event stations at the Arc Park where participants returned once the walk was over,” Gerhardt said.
