Five Herkimer high school students recently participated in the Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES Honors Program “Narrative Improvisation and Short Plays” event and developed their own short play.
“It was a day full of learning and bravery as students jumped outside of their comfort zones and put themselves out there in the name of improv,” Herkimer agriculture teacher Talia Baker said.
The event took place on Thursday, Dec. 5, at the Herkimer BOCES Gateway Center in Herkimer, as Herkimer Central School District high school students joined students from other local school districts. The Herkimer students who participated were Alaina Hutchinson, Inara Moyer, Grace Brinkerhoff, Alexis Wagner and Jonah Maiorano.
Professor Matthew Powers from Herkimer College walked students through exercises, improvisational games, the structure of storytelling and table reads of short plays.
After playing, practicing and reading, students came up with their own short play to perform in front of the entire group.
Herkimer students’ play consisted of a ghost searching for justice in her trial at a courtroom in Montana.
