At the Herkimer Jr./Sr. High School, the feeling of fall starts on the ride into the school campus.
Herkimer Jr./Sr. High School landscape design students and FFA members created a fall harvest design of decorations under the sign at the entrance to the high school.
“With mums donated from Annutto’s Greenhouses and a beautiful selection of pumpkins, squash and corn husks, the students were able to practice their knowledge of the principles of design in real life,” Herkimer agriculture teacher Talia Baker said. “Agriculture classes and FFA provide students with experiential learning opportunities to put into practice what we are learning in classes. The students did great.”
Herkimer Central School District offers various agriculture classes at the Jr./Sr. High School. For middle school, students in sixth grade can take an agriculture enrichment course to learn about the basics of where our food comes from, and every student in eighth grade will take Ag Tech8 for one quarter. In high school this year, agriculture classes offered are animal science; home maintenance; landscape design; and agriculture, food and natural resources. On alternate years, the offerings are vet science; horticulture; food production; and agriculture, food and natural resources
Creating the fall harvest design and learning about color theory are two of the topics that landscape design students started with this school year.
Baker said the decorations by the school sign were a group effort and that it’s nice the area has local agriculture businesses.
“If you are still looking for fall mums and pumpkins, please support local agriculture establishments such as Annutto’s Greenhouses,” Baker said. “They have a great selection. Thank you Annutto’s for the donation of mums, and thank you to the Carney family for the donation of the hay bales. We could not have done this without support from our community.”
