Herkimer Jr./Sr. High School art teacher Heather McCutcheon won the New York State Art Teachers Association’s New York State Art Educator of the Year Award.
“Congratulations to Heather,” Herkimer Superintendent Kathleen Carney said. “We are proud to have her share her talent, gift of teaching and love for her profession with the students at Herkimer Central School.”
McCutcheon won the award at the 75th annual New York State Art Teachers Association Conference, which took place from Nov. 17-19 at Crowne Plaza in Albany.
“It is with great honor and humility that I receive this prestigious award as NYSATA art teacher of the year,” McCutcheon said. “I would like to express my deepest gratitude and appreciation. I will continue to work hard to inspire future generations of artists and to instill in them a love for art.”
McCutcheon also is the Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES Arts in Education coordinator and the co-chair of New York State Youth Art Month. Last year, she helped New York State Youth Art Month win the top national Youth Art Month award: the Council for Art Education’s Youth Art Month Claire Flanagan Grand Award. Earlier this year, McCutcheon was also named an Apple Distinguished Education and traveled to Texas to deliver a showcase speech during the ADE Institute 2023 Americas event in Dallas.
